he Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is fining U.S. Steel Corp. for endangering employees by exposing them to asbestos. The fines, which total $170,000, come after months of investigation into practices at its Clairton Coke Works plant. This is the second time since 2011 that the company has been fined for these violations.
The United Steelworkers union filed complaints in February and March, stating that seven Clairton workers had been instructed to handle materials that contained the deadly fiber. When union officials approached U.S. Steel about the situation, they were told that it was not asbestos they were handling. OSHA’s investigation determined that U.S. Steel was endangering its employees and recommended that they immediately take steps to protect their employees from asbestos exposure.
U.S. Steel Repeatedly Endangered Employees
The Clairton plant was also the subject of an investigation in 2011, when U.S. Steel was fined $6,750 for seven violations. U.S. Steel will have the opportunity to appeal the current fines. The company claims that it has been cooperating with the investigation and is currently reviewing OSHA’s citations.
Asbestos is a fiber commonly found in insulation in older buildings; when particles are inhaled, they can become lodged in the chest cavity and cause serious respiratory conditions including mesothelioma. When employees are at risk of exposure in the workplace, employers must take the appropriate steps to ensure that employees are aware of the hazard and properly handling of the material. U.S. Steel has demonstrated a pattern of neglect in assigning tasks to its employees that would expose them. There is no safe level of exposure, and employees who have developed asbestos related-diseases as a result of workplace exposure may be able to obtain compensation.
